What will I learn?

Psychology is the scientific study of human behaviour. Its goals are to describe, understand, predict and control behaviour. It explores the individual’s behaviour and experience of the world. 

This includes such issues as: 

• how heredity and environment affect development through the lifespan, with a 
• focus on intelligence, gender and personality 
• what are the psychological processes that influence behaviour, with a focus on how the senses shape impressions of reality, how perception allows the individual to make sense of the world, and how normal and altered states of consciousness affect the way an individual perceives and experiences the world 
• how individuals learn 
• how individuals remember and forget

There is focus on applied psychology and how psychologists investigate specific problems and how this empirical information is applied to current issues. Psychology is helpful in preparing the individual for occupations or lifestyles requiring an understanding of human behaviour. It provides a broad perspective valuable to students intending to undertake tertiary studies in any profession requiring knowledge and experience in human interaction; medicine, education, law, nursing. If studied at university, it is a discipline that offers many career opportunities. 

Why should I consider this course?

The study of Psychology helps us understand how our behaviour is shaped by the societies and cultures we experience and how we in turn shape our environment. The course also aids in the understanding of individual mental processes and behaviour with all of its nuances. The investigative project allows students a practical application of their knowledge and skills.

What Skills does this course provide?

The study of TCE Psychology assists learners to develop effective language skills for communication, and numeracy skills for research, data analysis and other applications. In addition, they develop a range of broader skills including those of problem solving, critical evaluation and the application of processes of scientific inquiry. Learners are better able to assess psychological challenges that arise in their own environment and across their own lifespan, particularly in relation to personal development, good health, mental wellbeing, social interaction, communication and lifelong learning.

Psychology can lead to opportunities in a range of careers and tertiary study in a range of fields including; human resource management, education/teaching, research roles, community worker, social researcher, counsellor, student advisor, psychiatry, psychologist, welfare case manager, youth worker and social worker.
