TCE Music Technology Projects 1

What will I learn?

Music Technology Projects is a Year 11/12 UTAS Connections course for students wishing to extend their music technology knowledge and skills. The focus will be on knowledge and skills for capturing live music performance with microphones and/or creating digital music through the use of Midi technology. Students will also study the core skills of sound design through application of equalisation, dynamic processing and use of time-based effects such as reverb and delay.

Areas of study include:

• Music recording
• Sound editing and manipulation
• Music creation through the use of tools such as sequencers and MIDI
• Signal paths
• WHS in the music industry

Using industry standard audio design tools, students will engage in problem-based learning requiring them to analyse, experiment with, reflect on, revise and develop their craft and skill as music technologists.

Students are required to complete four audio projects throughout the year, choosing from project briefs made available from the University of Tasmania. Projects will be marked by staff from the School and the University of Tasmania assists in the assessment of projects 2 and 3.

The components of Module 1 are all compulsory and assessed only by staff from the School.

• Multi track recording and mixing

Module 4

• Sound design for vision (vision supplied – add music, Foley and dialogue)
• Radio advertisement
• Additional projects from the earlier modules 2 and 3

Why should I consider this course?

You should consider this course if you have an interest in the creative and digital arts wanting to develop skills for music production and sound design. The course also caters for creative musicians with a dual focus on recording original music through the prescribed University of Tasmania project briefs. Through studying this course you will focus on developing autonomous working skills in order to successfully complete the creative tasks.

What Skills does this course provide?

On completion of this course, you will have:

1. Developed an understanding of sound creation and manipulation
2. Experienced and become familiar with professional tools and skill sets relevant to the field
3. Have an understanding of and be able to apply appropriate standards for the delivery of music technology projects
4. Developed organisational skills to support the realisation of required project briefs as both an individual and as a member of a production team

What Pathway Options does this course provide?

As a part of the college outreach program for the University of Tasmania, completing this course allows for entry into FCJ111 Music Technology Projects II and also a direct pathway for further study at the University. It can also allow for industry experience to facilitate entry into other creative and production type areas of the creative arts industry including work in applying sound design for the visual media sector.
