What will I learn?

This course explores common human experiences and the interaction between motivation and behaviour. Through evidence based research and using the lenses of sociology and psychology, learners are encouraged to ask critical questions about social phenomena. Basic concepts and theoretical perspectives are applied to develop understanding of psychological development and youth culture. Learners will also study two specialist topics ā€“ one drawn from Sociology, the other from Psychology.

Why should I consider this course?

Introduction to Sociology and Psychology Level 2, is an introduction to the disciplines of Sociology and Psychology, focusing on basic terms, concepts and theoretical perspectives. It should be studied in Year 11, if you intend to study Psychology Level 3 and/or Sociology Level 3 in Year 12 - although neither of these courses require this pathway.Ā

What Skills does this course provide?

You will develop:

  • an understanding of the scientific method of social inquiry to gather quantitative and qualitative evidence
  • the capacity to explain social phenomena, human behaviour and issues
  • your ability to communicate basic sociological and psychological ideas, information, opinions, arguments and conclusions

What Pathway Options does this course provide?

As a Level 2 course, it is designed to prepare students for Level 3 courses in HASS or English and/or contribute to fulfilling the Reading and Writing (Literacy) requirements and attendance requirements of the TCE. This course can serve as a preparatory experience or as a stand alone subject for those interested in human development and behaviour.Ā
