What will I learn?

The SEHS course incorporates the disciplines of anatomy and physiology, biomechanics, psychology and nutrition, which are studied in the context of sport, exercise and health. A combination of syllabus content and experimental work provides the opportunity for students to acquire the knowledge and understanding necessary to apply scientific principles and analyse human performance. Content is structured into six compulsory topics for Standard Level and an additional seven topics for Higher Level. Students studying both levels are required to choose a further two optional topics from a list of four options.

If you are student who has an interest in inquiry, the SEHS course would provide you with the opportunity to delve into complex concepts and issues in the health and fitness field. Further to the commonly accepted factors that affect sporting performance - Ā anatomy, psychology and skill acquisition - you will have the opportunity to explore ethical and socio-cultural issues related to sport. As a Group 4 subject, SEHS provides a hands-on way to fulfil the IB requirement of a Science subject.Ā

What Skills does this course provide?

The SEHS course provides students with a deep understanding of a broad range of factors affecting sporting performance and socio-cultural issues relating to sport. This will provide relevant knowledge to those pursuing careers in the sport, health and fitness industries. The investigative studies and learning experiences undertaken provide students Ā with research skills and develop their understanding of scientific methodology that are beneficial to other aspects of the IB Diploma and transferable to future tertiary study. Students will learn to think critically and creatively.Ā
