What will I learn?

English Writing is a specialist course, aiming to develop students’ knowledge about, skills in and processes for the crafting and editing of their own work. Over the course of the year, students will engage in a range of activities, exercises and workshops in order to enhance their creativity; write in a variety of fiction and non-fiction forms; read and workshop each other’s creative pieces; and, respond personally, creatively and critically to their own and others’ work. Reading provides a strong foundation for writing. The course requires students read other writers’ texts and closely examine their approaches, alongside which students are expected to undertake their own, wide reading program as the modules build on the knowledge and skills gained from this process.

In addition to internal assessment, students complete a folio of polished, original work (5000- 8000 words) for external assessment, in which they aim to demonstrate their range as a writer and showcase the skills they have developed over the year.

Why should I consider this course?

Students that find writing across different genres and maybe considering careers in Public Relations, Journalism, Research, Content Writing or Publishing, English Teaching, Marketing or Project Management would benefit from this course. The course engages similar skills and texts studied in the Write Creatively Year 9/10 course, and is well suited to students that have studied either English 315 or English Literature in Year 11. Of course, if you love to write, follow your passion!

What Skills does this course provide?

This course aims to develop students’ skills in the exploration of ideas through writing. Students investigate texts and create their own, producing a significant body of original work. Emphasis is given to developing skills in crafting writing, both through workshop processes and through investigation of other writers’ approaches.

What Pathway Options does this course provide?

Successful completion of English Writing prepares learners for tertiary study in a range of areas, including English, and can be used to meet tertiary entrance requirements. English Writing skills are transferable, as most companies can benefit from candidates with excellent written and verbal communication, critical thinking and analytical skills.
