What will I learn?

In this course students explore how and why drama works are made by interpreting and responding to the works of others and by engaging in dramatic storytelling. They develop the skills, techniques and processes of drama through the performance of simple scripted works, and works they have devised.

Ā 

Personal confidence, and drama skills, knowledge and understanding are developed through a range of drama tasks. Students are involved in gathering information, devising drama, exploring text, reflecting, and rehearsing to prepare for ā€“ and participate in ā€“ dramatic performances.Ā

Students will be given the opportunity to view and reflect upon live dramatic performances.Ā

There are five compulsory units of study in this course:Ā

  • Unit 1: The Foundations of Drama and Dramatic Storytelling
  • Unit 2: Dramatic TextsĀ 
  • Unit 3: Naturalistic and Non-Naturalistic PerformanceĀ 
  • Unit 4: Ā Devising DramaĀ 
  • Unit 5: Form and Express Considered Opinions on Drama Works.

Work Requirements:Ā 

Unit 1: Journal/Workbook/Reflection & present minor performanceĀ 

Unit 2: Journal/Workbook/Reflection & experience and participate in three text types.Ā 

Unit 3: Journal/Workbook/Reflection & participate in both naturalism/non-naturalism pieces.Ā 

Unit 4: Journal/Workbook/Reflection & perform in and contribute to development of devised performance.Ā 

Unit 5: Create at least two responses (one oral, one written) to the drama work of others and create at least two responses to own drama making (see Units 3 and 4) Ā 

*At least one reflection/response in each of the two categories in Unit 5 must be written.Ā

On successful completion of this course, learners will be able to:

  • make and present own drama works
  • apply reflective practice to form and express considered opinions on the drama works of self and others
  • interpret and communicate dramatic intention and purpose
  • use fundamental drama skills*, and conventions, processes and technical production elements in drama works
  • create and perform types of character and roles
  • perform drama works
  • work individually and as a member of a team in a drama context.

Drama Foundations prepares students to undertake the study of Drama Level 3 in Year 12.
