What will I learn?

This course will be of interest to students who seek to develop a greater awareness of health issues at various life stages and to build capacity to manage their own personal health. Students will learn:Ā 

  • about issues and factors affecting personal identity
  • about the importance of personal identity and positive relationshipsĀ 
  • to recognise behaviours that impact positively and negatively on personal health and wellbeingĀ 
  • to recognise valid and relevant sources of health informationĀ 
  • to communicate personal views on a wide range of health-related issues in various contexts
  • how to contact, join and participate in community recreational activities

This course comprises compulsory and elective topics, practical and theory based units. Compulsory units address issues relating to personal identity, diet and nutrition, risk taking behavior, personal fitness and personal care.Ā

Elective units consider issues relating to personal and community support, alternative complementary and integrated health practices, grief and loss, personal presentation (grooming and deportment) and stress management. There will be practical opportunities for students to participate in activities that will enhance their personal fitness and engage in recreational activities such as archery, gym classes, wheelchair basketball and others depending on the interest of the class.Ā

Throughout the year students will develop and maintain an individual wellbeing plan that collectively embraces and integrates issues impacting their own personal health. Students will be expected to contribute to small or large group discussions and work both individually and with others on investigative projects and participate in a variety of practical experiences.Ā

Assessment tasks in this course include research tasks, journal reflections, individual and/or group presentations, or negotiated projects.Ā

What Skills does this course provide?

Personal Health and Wellbeing is aimed at developing independence, critical and creative thinking skills and awareness around lifelong health issues, so learners are prepared to manage their health throughout their adult lives. This subject is designed to help individuals feel positive about who they are and enjoy healthy practical learning experiences. Students are encouraged to develop healthy lifestyles and to become actively involved in shaping the influences that determine their health and wellbeing. They develop a range of personal and interpersonal skills, which underpin positive health behaviours.

What Pathway Options does this course provide?

Supports the transition to studying Level 3 courses such as Health Studies, Sports Science, and Food and Nutrition. The course also provides skills and knowledge for learners who wish to undertake Athlete Development or a VET qualifications such as the Ā Certificate III in Fitness.Ā
