Introduction to VET

Introduction to Vocational Education & Training (VET)

VET courses are designed to give students access to workplace learning. These opportunities will enhance a student’s general education and provide pathways to career opportunities, part-time work, TAFE training and university.

 

Students can take pre-tertiary and non pre-tertiary TCE subjects combined with a VET subject to give them broad opportunities and provide them with industry certification while still at school.

  • these programs are developed and approved by industry
  • you will receive a qualification that is recognised Australia wide and is based on assessment at the School and in the workplace
  • your VET results will count towards your TCE
  • you can try out career options and begin your training while still at school
  • you will learn job skills that will be useful in a range of employment situations
  • you will spend time in a number of workplaces
  • the programs offer a clear pathway to further education and training.

Other VET Courses 

We are able to provide opportunities for students to undertake VET courses that are tailored to specific needs and interests in consultation with outside providers. Students who elect such courses are required to be self-directed learners.

 

Some examples of courses that can be undertaken include:

  • Aquaculture
  • Animal Studies
  • Allied Health Assistance

Some individual VET courses may require a considerable commitment in terms of course costs and equipment. Depending on the costs, there may be some cases where families will be required to make an extra financial contribution. If required, the additional costs will be discussed during the course counselling process on an individual basis.

School-Based Apprenticeships/Traineeships

We can support students in undertaking school-based apprenticeships or traineeships, which enable students to combine paid work and training to achieve a nationally recognised qualification while still attending school and working toward their TCE. More information on these can be found via Skills Tasmania.
