What will I learn?

Practical dance skills and theoretical knowledge form the basis of this course and inform the choreographic studies and dance appreciation projects that are undertaken by students. The principles of technique, anatomical considerations and safe dance practices are learnt to give dancers the ability to improve and refine their physical skills. Students must demonstrate not only a sound grasp of technique but be able to utilise their skills to choreograph and perform expressive movement.Ā

Ā

Choreographic work includes a study of the processes and devices of dance composition. Students aim to increase their personal movement vocabulary and create meaningful dance for their externally assessed solo. They also choreograph a work for an ensemble of dancers. This entails undertaking a leadership role in ensuring that the performance of their works is appropriately rehearsed and staged (this includes music, lighting, costumes and staging). In dance appreciation students reflect and analyse their own choreography and learn to appraise the work of other choreographers within a context of artistic and cultural perspectives.Ā

Ā

Internal and external assessment is both practical and written.Ā

Ā

External assessment for Dance Choreography and Performance has three components:

  1. Choreography: students are required to choreograph and perform a solo and group piece. The performance is viewed and marked by a TASC appointed panel.Ā
  2. Written Folios: The externally assessed Critical Appraisal essay is a comparison of two dance works (live or recorded). The Choreographic Reflections essays are the students written explanation of their own choreography. Both pieces are scaffolded and assessed internally throughout the year before being submitted to TASC in Term 3 and 4 respectively.

Please note:Ā

  • Success in this course is dependent on consistent and active engagement in the course content in the classroom throughout the year.
  • Students will be required to attendĀ class rehearsals, a number of which may be scheduled for after school, some Sundays and/or during the Term 3 term break.Ā
  • Students are also required to attend and view live dance performances during the year.Ā
