There is no external examination for this course.Ā 

Ā 

Students will present a final folio of their work which is to be externally assessed along with a brief discussion between the student, a staff member from UTAS, and the classroom teacher.Ā 

Ā 

There are usually two assessment tasks per module (there are four modules in total). These assessment tasks vary but include; a map quiz, a verbal reflection on learning, a literature review, a case study, and an essay.Ā 

What will I learn?

The course is divided into four modules:Ā 

Ā 

Module 1 - Introduction to Asia

Globalization - the ever-increasing interconnection of Asia to Australia and the rest of the world. Ā Modernity and tradition - which aspects of Asian society have adapted to modernization, and which aspects of traditional Asia remain mostly unchanged.Ā 

Ā 

Module 2 - Many Asiaā€™s

This module explores ethnic diversity within and across borders of Asian countries. The diverse practice of Islam across Asia. The role of women within Islamic communities across Asia. The rise of the term Nation-state and the impact of decolonization on birthing new countries.

Module 3 - Young Asia

Youth culture, including the rise of gaming culture in China and South Korea. The relationship between K-pop and the popularity of plastic surgery in South Korea. Sex skewed ratios that are caused by male preference in India and China.Ā

Module 4 - What's for Dinner?

The module explores food security in the context of rising populations. We look at the culture of food consumption and the rise of the fast-food industry. Food production and farming practices in response to Asia's changing climate.Ā

Why should I consider this course?

There are many reasons why students should take this course;

Ā 

This course provides a fantastic 'taste' of what life at university is like. By taking this course, students will develop an understanding of the types of assessments offered by UTAS, become familiar with the online student hub (Mylo), and experience a new way of learning through lectures and tutorials (with the added assistance of a classroom teacher). In addition, on completion of this course, students can credit 25% of their first-year study at the University of Tasmania, HECS free!

Taking this course helps students become Asian literate. Asia homes 60% of the total world's population and is home to the fastest-growing economies in the world. Taking this course allows students to build knowledge of the histories, geographies, arts, cultures, and languages of the diverse Asian region.Ā

The skills students learn in this course are transferable to all subjects and may indeed build success for students across a range of subject areas.

Locate, evaluate, summarise and utilise relevant research material related to Asia.

Writing and communication

Construct a research essay and other assignment formats which conform to university requirements regarding referencing, style, and written expression.

Reflect on learning and communicate this through a journal.

Social empathy

Develop skills of empathy by understanding a range of perspectives on ethical issues impacting groups of people across Asia.Ā

This course provides multiple pathway options for students. These include, but are not limited to areas such as; International Relations, Politics and Diplomacy, Government, Business, Asian Languages, Tourism, Farming and Agriculture, Economics, and Education.
