Sustainability news

By Ms Rebecca Kertes, Sustainability Leader

It has been a huge term for Sustainability Club, with the Resource Smart Schools Awards and World Environment Day celebrations. On 5 June a small group of students and teachers attended the RSS Awards at the MCG as finalists in the emerging schools category.

While we unfortunately didn’t win, it was so amazing to hear from a wide variety of Victorian schools about the amazing work they are doing, and be inspired to bring some ideas back to BHHS!

The very next day on 6 June we celebrated World Environment Day at school. There was a plant-based bake sale, a guessing game of hard-to-recycle items, an environmental booklet, planting of seedlings in our new raised garden bed (using compost from our new compost tumbler!!) and of course a free-dress day.

We raised over $700 to put towards our next project – bird boxes and nesting boxes around the school, so thank you so much to everyone who participated in some way!

Winter energy saving tips!

  • Set your heating to 18 – 20 degrees - every degree higher than this can increase heating costs by 15%!

  • Fit seals to windows and doors - Draught seals block cracks and openings by helping keep the heat in and the cold out!

  • Turn off non-essential appliances at the switch - electronic devices can use up to 10% of your household's electricity when on standby.

  • Dress for the weather - encourage your children to bring jumpers and jackets to use when cold.
