Bringing Mathematics to life
by the Year 8 Mathematics teaching team
To engage students and spark excitement about learning mathematics, our Year 8 Mathematics team has organised a series of hands-on activities designed to help students connect mathematical concepts to real-life experiences.
Discovering the Area of a Circle
In one activity, students explored the formula for the area of a circle by cutting a circle into equal segments and rearranging them into a rectangle. This visual and tactile experience helped them understand how the formula is derived using their prior knowledge of rectangles. Many students were amazed to discover the formula on their own—an inspiring moment of discovery!
Outdoor Estimation Challenge
After learning how to calculate the circumference and area of circles, some classes moved outdoors to apply their knowledge. In the school quadrangle, students estimated the circumference of the circular stage and the area of the round tables near the canteen (see banner image above).
They used creative techniques—counting steps, measuring with their hands, or estimating using their height. Despite the challenge of working without calculators, many were able to successfully solve the problems with impressive accuracy.
Surface Area Group Competition
In a lively group competition, students measured and calculated the surface area of real-world objects such as a Favourite chocolate box (with trapezium faces) or a tissue box. Working in teams, they discussed different strategies and shared plenty of laughs as they tackled the task together. The classroom buzzed with energy, collaboration, and mathematical thinking.
These meaningful and engaging measurement activities not only helped students apply their knowledge to real-life contexts but also allowed them to experience the joy of learning mathematics in creative and practical ways.
