Science Department Report

Brennan Deppeler

It has been an exciting and productive start to the year in Science across the College. We are delighted to welcome two new members to our team, Leigh Edmonston and Mitchell Nicholson, who are both teaching within the junior Science program. We are thrilled to have them on board.

Our Year 7 students have begun the year with a foundational unit focused on laboratory safety and equipment. This mini-unit helps students become confident and capable in the Science labs before transitioning into their Physics studies later this term.

Year 8 students have been exploring key concepts in Chemistry, including the structure of the periodic table and the role of subatomic particles. It has been wonderful to see students building their understanding of how matter is organised at a fundamental level.

In Year 9, students have been investigating waves and are now applying their knowledge to the study of heat transfer. Their learning connects theoretical concepts with real-world applications across Physics.

Our Year 10 students are also immersed in Chemistry, examining chemical bonding and reactions. Practical investigations have supported their understanding of how substances interact and change.

Our VCE Science students have started the year with focus and determination, with several classes already commencing their School Assessed Coursework (SAC's). It has been impressive to see the level of commitment and academic maturity displayed in these senior classes.

Looking ahead, we are excited about upcoming learning opportunities beyond the classroom. Senior Biology students will be attending BioLab in Geelong, where they will participate in hands-on practical experiences that extend their VCE studies. Junior students in Years 8, 9 and 10 will also have the opportunity to engage in programs at Tech School, exploring emerging technologies and applied science skills.

We look forward to sharing more highlights from the Science learning area as the year progresses.
