Year 8 Report

Josh Wells

Welcome back to Year 8 at Woodmans Hill Secondary College! We hope all families enjoyed a restful break and that students are feeling refreshed and ready for a busy and rewarding year ahead. Year 8 is an important stage in the middle years, where students continue to develop greater independence, resilience and confidence in their learning. Already, it has been wonderful to see students settling quickly into their classes, reconnecting with friends and embracing new challenges.

We were thrilled with the fantastic turnout at our recent Swimming Carnival. The day was filled with enthusiasm, house spirit and plenty of friendly competition, both in and out of the pool. It was particularly pleasing to see so many students getting involved on the day. Whether competing in events, cheering on their peers or a scavenger hunt of mini-challenges. Events like these play an important role in building connection, teamwork and a positive sense of belonging within our Year 8 cohort alongside all of our other year levels. With such a strong start to our sporting calendar, we are now looking ahead to the Athletics Carnival, which promises to be another exciting opportunity for students to showcase their talents, demonstrate sportsmanship and contribute to their house pride. Go Barrabin!

Year 8 students also participated in the Optus Digital Thumbprint cyberbullying workshop. This interactive session encouraged students to reflect on their online behaviour, understand the impact of their digital footprint and develop strategies for responding to cyberbullying. The workshop provided practical tools to help students make safe, respectful and responsible choices online. In an increasingly connected world, it is vital that young people are equipped with the knowledge and skills to navigate digital spaces confidently and ethically. We encourage families to continue these conversations at home to reinforce the important messages shared during the session.

Over the next few weeks, our College will remain pretty busy as – if you can believe it – we go past halfway for term 1.
