This term, our Year 7–10 students have been actively involved in our Minor Games unit. Designed to develop movement skills, strategy and teamwork, the unit has provided a fun and energetic start to Physical Education classes across all year levels.
As students settled back into school routines, the opening lessons intentionally focused on working with a variety of classmates, rebuilding communication skills and re-establishing positive group dynamics. Minor games provided the perfect platform for students to reconnect, collaborate and develop confidence in a supportive environment.

In the first lesson, students participated in games such as Octopus, Line Tag and Bench Ball. These activities challenged students to adjust their movement skills, change direction quickly, use space effectively and apply simple strategies to increase their success. Rather than relying purely on speed, students learnt that positioning, awareness and decision-making play a significant role in game performance.
The second lesson built on this foundation through games including Sprouts, Run the Gauntlet, Capture the Flag, Mat Ball and Mat Sliding Relays. While skill execution remained important, there was a stronger emphasis on fair play, communication and positive participation. Students explored how encouraging teammates, applying rules honestly and managing competition respectfully can directly enhance both individual and team success.
It has been fantastic to see students across all year levels demonstrating enthusiasm, resilience and sportsmanship throughout the unit. Minor games provide an engaging way to build confidence, adaptability and collaboration skills — all essential components of lifelong physical activity.
Year 7 and 9 students will now move into an athletics and target unit while the Year 8 and 10s will have a striking and fielding focus.
