Interschool Sport

Mr. Russell Warburton

It has been a busy term for sport at Melba. Teams have been training in the morning, lunchtime, and afterschool. We started the year with Senior Round Robin. We entered 1 boys cricket team and 3 boy and 3 girl volleyball teams. We were very competitive but just weren’t good enough in the end to win division. We did however win a few matches with each of our teams.

Melba Swimming sports came next on a glorious summer’s day at the picturesque Croydon Memorial Pool. It was an intense battle throughout the day with Boorimul coming out on top just beating Narrang.

On 24th February, our intermediate teams were up next with a boys cricket team, 1 boy and girl tennis teams and 3 boy and 3 girl volleyball teams. Volleyball was so popular we filled a whole bus. With the 3 other schools having at least double our enrolment numbers we held our own in all sports.

Year 8 sports day was on the 13th March. This was our most successful day with girls A volleyball winning and going through to division and our girls’ softball automatically winning. All other teams were very competitive.

Division Swimming was next where we sent a small team to compete against the 3 other schools. Even with a small team we came 3rd overall with all our students stepping up and showing true grit and determination basically showing the Melba way. We had 2 age group champions in Elisha Lay and Gemma Donker who both won 4 individual events and will go on to the next round of swimming. Finally, our awesome year 7 competed on Friday 20th March. This was the first time they have competed in the Melba uniform and all of them were amazing winning several tennis and volleyball matches and only just not winning the pennant on the day.

What a great term by Melba students. Bring on term 2 with our school athletics day coming up alongside many round robin days.

Go Melba!
