It has been a busy and engaging start to the year in Science, with students across all year levels exploring new concepts through discussion, investigation and hands-on practical work.
Our Year 7 students began the year by exploring Earth’s place in the universe. They investigated phenomena such as day and night, tides, eclipses and the phases of the Moon, developing an understanding of how movements in space affect what we observe from Earth.
In Year 8, students have been learning about cells and body systems. As part of their first assessment task (CAT 1), students designed and carried out an investigation into how exercise affects breathing rate, focusing on key scientific skills such as collecting and analysing data. A highlight for many students was the heart dissection, which allowed them to explore the structure of this vital organ firsthand.
Our Year 9 Biology students have been studying the nervous and immune systems, learning how the body detects and responds to changes in the environment. Students also completed a practical investigation comparing bacteria collected from different locations around the school, which sparked some fascinating discussions about microbes in our everyday environment.
Year 10 Biology students have been investigating evolution and cell division, exploring how species change over time and how cells replicate through mitosis.
At the VCE level, students have begun their coursework for the year and are working through their first SACs. Students are already engaging with complex scientific concepts and continuing to develop their scientific analysis and problem-solving skills.
It has been wonderful to see students asking thoughtful questions, working collaboratively and developing their scientific skills throughout the term. We look forward to another exciting term of discovery in the Science labs.
