Term 1 saw our Year 7-9 PE classes kick off with a variety of striking based sports, including Softball, Cricket, Badminton, Volleyball, Tennis, Pickleball, with year 7’s having a focus on fundamental movement skills and also worked through their first CAT task for PE which took a look at fitness testing and why we use it. Year 8’s diving into striking and fielding games and Year 9’s on hand-eye coordination. Our Year 10 PE: Sport and Recreation had a focus on strategies in invasion games and began research the history and tactics of some international sports before beginning to look inward at the musculoskeletal system.
Pathways through Athlete Development started off the year with our Year 7’s learning the key skills and ideas needed to be a great team member and how to effectively communicate in different sporting situations, as well as looking into how mental health can impact athletes at all levels. Our Year 8’s completed SEPEP for term 1 where students were placed into teams for a 6 weeklong handball tournament. Students took on the roles of coach, umpire, scorers and team managers, working together to develop tactics and strategies to compete for a spot in the Grand Final played on the final day of term.
In health for Term 1 our Year 10’s worked through the topics of Development exploring how we as humans grow and change as we transition through various lifespan stages. Year 9 Health saw students exploring Mental Health, where they discussed various causes for mental health issues and a range of practices and skills that can be used to improve a person’s mental health. Year 8 Health saw students begin our semester long Respectful Relationships unit where they learn skills and knowledge around how to be safe in different types of relationships and how to ensure that they are being positive friends and family members. Finally, our year 7’s began looking at how we define health and the different types of health (Physical, Mental, Emotional, Social) that impact how healthy we are.
