Mr. Ben Hodgens
Our mathematics department is pleased to report an energetic and productive start to 2026. Students across all year levels have engaged enthusiastically with their programs, and we're seeing excellent progress already.
Year 7-9 students began the year with a focused review of foundational number skills. This strategic approach ensures students have solid grounding in core concepts – such as operations, fractions, decimals, and percentages – before moving into more complex topics. This review has proven invaluable in identifying knowledge gaps early and building student confidence as we move deeper into the curriculum.
Year 10 classes kicked off with measurement, a topic many students find relatable and accessible. This familiar starting point has helped students transition smoothly into the year while reinforcing practical applications of mathematics in real-world contexts.
Our VCE cohorts have hit the ground running, diving straight into their mathematics studies with energy and focus, picking up where they left off in Step Up.
A highlight of our early-year progress is the mathematics team's trial of mini whiteboards as a formative assessment tool. This simple but powerful strategy allows teachers to quickly check student understanding in real time, providing immediate feedback and enabling responsive teaching. The response has been overwhelmingly positive – students are highly engaged, teachers are gaining valuable insight into student thinking and teaching is more responsive to student needs. We're seeing stronger participation, particularly from students who might otherwise hesitate to share their thinking publicly.
