As Term 1 comes to an end, we can reflect on the exciting learning that has been taking place in Science at Woodmans Hill Secondary College.
All Year 7 students have successfully obtained their Bunsen burner licences and can confidently set up and use this essential piece of scientific equipment. They have also completed their unit on Forces and are now looking forward to studying Chemistry in Term 2.
Our Year 8 students have been exploring Chemistry, investigating the Periodic Table and examining how catalysts can increase the rate of chemical reactions.
In Year 9, students have been studying Physics, with a focus on waves, and will soon turn their attention to the Brain and Reflexes.
Year 10 students are currently learning about Motion, including how to apply the speed formula. In Applied Science, students have been designing and constructing bottle rockets, which will be launched later this term.
Our VCE Science students have had a busy start to the year, completing assessment tasks and engaging in a range of practical activities.
Year 12 Biology students recently travelled to BioLab in Geelong, where they worked in a laboratory setting to create transformed bacteria capable of producing human growth hormone. During this experience, students performed PCR, conducted Gel Electrophoresis, and completed the BacterialTtransformation process.

We are also proud to have nine Year 8 students representing Woodmans Hill Secondary College at the Ballarat Tech School’s Boys in STEM and Girls in STEM programs this week, with further sessions scheduled across Terms 2, 3, and 4.
