New Purple Lid Recycling Bins at School

You may have noticed the addition of a purple lidded bin in the Senior Centre, The Orchard and at the entrance to the Theatre. These bins are part of an exciting initiative to help our community support the Victorian Container Deposit Scheme by collecting eligible drink containers and returning them for a refund. This small change can make a big difference.

Why this matters

Every year, millions of drink containers end up in landfill or as litter. By collecting and returning eligible cans and bottles, we can:

  • Reduce waste going to landfill

  • Keep our school grounds cleaner

  • Support sustainability and environmental responsibility

  • Raise funds that can be reinvested into student programs and sustainability projects

How the scheme works

Eligible drink containers (most aluminium cans and plastic bottles) can be returned through the Victorian deposit system for a 10-cent refund per item. Our Business Manager Mr Cameron works with a company that comes to school and collects containers from those purple bins.

However, that is only possible if we do not contaminate the bins with other sorts of waste. When we work together as a school community, be mindful about the correct use of those bins,  those small contributions add up quickly.

How students and families can help

We invite everyone to get involved:

  • Place empty drink cans and bottles (check the labels!) in the new recycling bins at school

  • Talk about recycling and sustainability at home

  • Encourage responsible waste habits in everyday life

A community effort 🌱

This initiative is about more than recycling — it’s about building lifelong habits and empowering students to make a positive impact. Together, we can turn everyday waste into meaningful change.
