Model United Nations Assembly
Our students representing Brighton Secondary College in the National Competition in Canberra
On the 24th and 25th of May, 4 of our most politically engaged students – Jennifer Mclaughlin, Zoe Anzman, Jennifer Morrison (Debating Captain) and Thaya Kovaleva - took part in the Model United Nations Assembly (MUNA) organised by our local Rotary Club.
They were split into 2 teams and each represented a member state in the real United Nations to debate resolutions and create diplomatic agreements in response to real world issues. MUNA is an annual competition held all around Australia, and the best teams in each district are sent to Canberra to compete in the Nationals! They competed among 20 national teams from 15 different schools across the district.
Participants in MUNA are judged not only on how well they can represent their country in diplomacy and engagement with the resolutions, but also in how well their costumes match the culture of their assigned country.
Our 2 teams both engaged excellently in the diplomacy of making deals and creating alliances between countries of similar interests. We ended up taking home the 2nd best costume, 2nd best individual speaker, and most importantly: 2 members of the debating team, Thaya Kovaleva and Jennifer Morrison, have taken home the win and will be representing Brighton Secondary College in the National Competition in Canberra!
Please join us in congratulating both teams on their achievements and cheer on Thaya and Jennifer M. as they head to Canberra in August!
