Prep

Phonics
In Phonics this term, the Prep students have been learning the sounds s, a, t, p, i, n, m, d and g. Each day, we focus on one letter and practise identifying, saying and using that sound to build simple words. Students use their mini whiteboards during mat sessions to practise forming letters and blending sounds to read and write words. They then complete independent activities in their books to consolidate and strengthen their understanding of these sounds.
Reading
In Reading this term, the Prep students have been learning about important print concepts, including identifying the front cover, recognising letters, understanding that letters form words, and that words come together to make sentences. During each reading session, we explore a Big Book together, with these skills taught explicitly through shared reading. Students then complete an activity based on our class text to reinforce and apply their learning.
Writing
In Writing this term, the Prep students have been learning about recount writing. Each Monday, we share and discuss the exciting things students did over the weekend. Together, we model a simple sentence about their experiences, which students then copy before independently attempting to write one word on their own. They also illustrate their writing to match their sentence. They have been exploring rhyme and poetry. Through explicit whole-class teaching, students learn to recognise and create rhyming words. They then move to their tables to complete an independent activity that reinforces the focus of the lesson and supports the development of their early writing skills.
Maths
In Mathematics this term, the Prep students have been learning about patterns. They have explored AB and ABC patterns using concrete materials, shapes and colours to create and extend repeating sequences. Students have also been developing their understanding of time by learning the days of the week and identifying different times of the day.
