Writing

In preparation for NAPLAN we have been learning how to write Narrative and Persuasive texts. Some of our favourite parts of Narrative were learning about sizzling starts, building a dramatic climax and using adjectives and adverbs. While learning about Persuasive texts we enjoyed coming up with ideas for arguments and using persusive devices like rhetorical questions and statistics. NAPLAN is typed on computer in Grade 5 so we have enjoyed practicing our typing using typing.com by doing lessons, speed tests and playing games!

Here are some samples of our work from this term so far:

Reading

Our focus for reading this term has been Prediction and Visualising.

We have loved reading our class novel 'Boy Overboard' by Morris Gleitzman. While reading we practiced predicting what we thought would happen next in the story - with so many dramatic twists and turns happening so far Morris definitely kept us guessing - and changing our predictions!

Visualising what we have been reading is another skill we have used while reading Boy Overboard. Seeing how we can be pulled into Jamal's world by the authors descriptions inspired us to look at our own I-pick books to see how other authors use descriptive language to help us feel for the characters and become part of the story.

Maths: Maths in Grade 5 this term started with Data representation. We learnt about how to draw and interpret dot plots and column graphs. We enjoyed analysing and creating graphs - especially when the data was from our own grades. Some of the parents even got involved in giving data during our Open Classroom session!

We have moved into learning about Multiples and Factors where we have been challenged by new content but felt inspired when we finally got our 'Ah ha!' moment.
