Physical Education

Prep

This term, the Prep students are to be congratulated on their efforts in Physical Education. They have enthusiastically participated in a range of games that have developed fundamental movement skills such as running, jumping and hopping.

Students have also engaged in a variety of interactive activities that focus on throwing, catching and aiming towards a target.

Level 1- 2

The Level 1-2 students have been developing their fundamental skills of movement, including running, hopping, skipping, side stepping and walking or jogging backwards. They are learning to play fairly in warm up tag games and the beginning of the year has a strong focus learning their new classmates names and by using teamwork to complete a range of challenge activities. One of these is the hula hoop hut building challenge. Students work cooperatively to construct a hula hut out of 6 hula hoops and then need to assist a student through the hut without it collapsing or touching the hut as their teammate crawls through.

Level 3-4

The Level 3-4 students have also completed teamwork challenges such as 'Cross the River' and 'The Mat Move'. These tasks enable students to demonstrate leadership with an emphasis on communication. At times students must complete varying levels of the task with or without oral communication. Success can only occur if  participants are fully engaged and perform their role in the challenge. In Level 3- 4 there is growing independence and this is reflected in peer observations for a range of commonly used skills found in many sports popular sports such as basketball dribbling, soccer passing, underarm and overarm throwing and catching, chest passing, an A.F.L. drop punt and more. Students analyse the skills performed by their peers and provide feedback on areas performed well and areas for improvement. These are regularly revisited until the completion of their primary school years.

Level 5-6

In Level 5-6, students have also completed team challenges with communication and leadership once again being a strong focus. 'Cross the River' and 'The Mat Move' are replicated with additional obstacles presented to challenge the groups accordingly. This provides an opportunity to develop their current friendships and forge new connections with students they may not have spent much time with in the past.

Interschool sport is a big part of Term 1 and 2 for the senior students and P.E. has incorporated skill based training and games for all students. Becoming more familiar with the rules for hot shots tennis, softball, basketball, cricket and rounders prepares the Level 6 for competitive match play and instills confidence in the Level 5 students when they get their their opportunity next year. KBH Brumbies Hockey Clinic

A big thank you to the KBH Brumbies Hockey Club and especially Lauren, Sophie and Will for the week of free coaching provided to all Level 1-6 students last week. Hockey is a fast and exciting sport. Our students were fortunate enough to learn some essential skills through a variety of games. This included how to hold the stick correctly, passing, dragging (for changing direction, dribbling and even shooting for goal. All of this in a 1 hour session. The level of improvement for most students in such a short time was really impressive. If you had not considered hockey as a sport suitable for your child, you may want to reconsider and give them the opportunity to try out at the KBH Brumbies in Elgar Rd, Mont Albert North.
