Level Three

Reading

Level 3 have started the year focusing on building strong reading habits and stamina. Students are practising reading daily, and selecting “good fit” books. We have spent the term revising the comprehension strategy of visualising, focusing on describing what we visualised when reading and identifying evidence from the text that helped us. It has been wonderful to see students settling into new Reading routines in Level 3.

As part of our learning, we are also gently preparing for NAPLAN by practising reading a range of text types, answering different styles of questions, and looking at past papers. Our focus is on building confidence and understanding the structure of the assessment in a calm and supportive way.

Writing

In Writing, students have been focusing on narrative writing, creating engaging orientations, developing characters and ensuring the structure and paragraphs are clear. We have also been using the editing strategy 'CUPS' to help students identify areas of improvement in their writing, specifically relating to 'Capitals', 'Understanding', 'Punctuation' and 'Spelling'. This week, students have begun focusing on persuasive writing.

To prepare for NAPLAN, students are practising responding to writing prompts within a set time and revising key skills such as planning before writing and editing their work carefully.

Mathematics

Level 3 students are consolidating their understanding of place value, working with numbers into the thousands and ten thousands. Students are representing numbers in different ways using MAB, identifying the value of digits, and explaining their mathematical thinking.

As part of our NAPLAN preparation, students are becoming familiar with answering different styles of questions, and practising problem-solving questions that require careful reading and reasoning.

Life Education

Level 3 students participated in the Life Education incursion Friends and Feelings, where they explored friendship skills, recognising emotions, working collaboratively and developing positive strategies for managing feelings. It was a valuable and engaging learning experience for all students, and meeting Harold was a bonus!
