May is an important month for promoting road safety awareness across our school community, with a number of key initiatives and events encouraging students to stay safe and make positive choices on and around the roads.

National Road Safety Week (17–24 May 2026) is a national awareness campaign in Victoria and across Australia promoting safer roads for everyone. It encourages safer driving behaviours and highlights the importance of reducing road trauma, including risks like speeding, distraction, fatigue, and drink or drug driving.

Cool Head Young Driver Program

Wangaratta High School is thrilled to host the Cool Heads Young Driver Program on May 13th, 2026.

 

This is a thought-provoking, confronting, and informative road safety initiative designed to provide young drivers and their families with crucial advice on a wide range of road safety topics.

🚪Doors Open: 5:30 PM

🎤Presentation Starts: 6:00 PM

🎟️Cost: FREE

 

Cool Heads is dedicated to highlighting the real-world consequences of distraction and risk-taking while behind the wheel.

 

Hear directly from frontline professionals, including:

➡️Victoria Police – Major Collision Investigation Unit

➡️Magistrates’ Court of Victoria

➡️Rural Ambulance Victoria

 

We will also be joined by Rosalie Dows, who will share her powerful personal story regarding how road trauma deeply impacts families and communities.

Walk Safely to School Day, May 22nd 2026

To celebrate National Road Safety Week, we are encouraging students to walk to school where possible. Upon arrival, students are welcome to visit the Food Room to enjoy a hot chocolate and some fruit, kindly provided by the Wellbeing Team.
