Yarning Circle’s “Red Flags” Experience!

Yarning Circle students were fortunate to visit the Wangaratta Art Gallery to see a special exhibition by Wadawurrung artist Kait James, titled Red Flags.

Kait transforms mass-produced souvenirs such as tea towels, flags, and dolls into powerful artworks with cultural meaning. These items, often known as “Aboriginalia” and produced mainly between the 1950s and 1980s for tourists, are repurposed as her canvas. She sews and embroiders bold text and colourful designs over the original images.

During the visit, students explored the exhibition with gallery staff, learning about the background of Kait’s work and sharing their own perspectives. The session concluded with a hands-on activity focused on identity.

A big thank you to the Wangaratta Art Gallery for providing this valuable experience for staff and students.
