ANZAC Day Assembly

A significant occasion on the school calendar, the ANZAC Day Assembly was held at our school on April 23rd.

We were honoured to welcome representatives from the 2/24th Battalion Association, Janice Young and Karen O’Shea; Wangaratta RSL members Liz Rouse Salmon and Ash Power; Wangaratta Councillor Ashlee Fitzpatrick; Tim McCurdy MP, Member for Ovens Valley; and Ben Hedderman, School Council President.

Our Symphonic Band performed brilliantly, including a stirring rendition of The Great Escape and a moving performance of The Last Post by Amelia Harding.

Throughout the assembly, we were reminded of the courage, sacrifice, and resilience of those who have served, and continue to serve, in times of conflict.

A particularly poignant moment occurred when Prefect Brady Fischer read a letter written by former student Lieutenant Arthur Steel to his family during his service in the First World War. Lieutenant Steel was tragically killed in action at the Somme, France, in 1919.

Upon the conclusion of the assembly, Prefects, special guests, the official party, and Year 7 students gathered at the school memorial on Edwards Street. Together, they laid wreaths and sprigs of rosemary in solemn commemoration of past students who sacrificed their lives for our freedom.

Prefects also marched in Wangaratta on Saturday, ANZAC Day, proudly representing the school and laying a wreath at the Cenotaph alongside thousands of locals in a solemn act of remembrance.
