A great show at Chevron 

During an excursion to the stunning Chevron building for the Powering Careers in Energy Exploration Day, a group of Year 10 students were an absolute credit to both our school and their families. Their behaviour, engagement and willingness to participate reflected positively on our school.

Will Bratley, alongside a very small group of students from other schools, actively contributed to discussions, asking thoughtful questions and demonstrating the values associated with the “Chevron Way”. His contribution earned him a certificate and an Officeworks voucher. 

Congratulations also to Bella Coleman and Daniel Johnston, who each received certificates and Officeworks vouchers in recognition of the skills, knowledge, and personal qualities they demonstrated throughout the year. These are the very attributes that Chevron looks for in its future employees, making their achievements particularly noteworthy.

A benefit of this program is that, upon successful completion, all participating students will receive two WACE credits, providing valuable recognition for their learning and engagement throughout the year. 

Experiences like this are a wonderful reminder of the incredible young people we have at our school. Our students thrive when given opportunities to engage in real-world, practical learning experiences and they truly showcased their potential. Well done to all involved.

Philosophers in action

St George's Philosophy Club attended the annual Philosothon at the University of Western Australia, competing against students from twelve different schools.

The competition challenged students to participate in three discussion rounds using the “community of inquiry’’ methodology. Students engaged in collaborative philosophical dialogue, exploring complex questions and ideas based on a range of stimulus materials. Rather than debating to win an argument, participants were encouraged to think critically, listen carefully and work together to deepen their understanding of philosophical concepts.

Our students represented St George's exceptionally well. While it can be daunting to share ideas in a group setting with students from other schools, our team embraced the challenge with confidence, maturity and intellectual curiosity.

It was particularly pleasing to observe students:

• Listening respectfully to different perspectives
• Encouraging and supporting one another
• Formulating and articulating well-reasoned opinions
• Building thoughtfully on the ideas of other participants
• Posing insightful questions and thought experiments

These qualities are at the heart of strong philosophical inquiry, and our students demonstrated them admirably throughout the competition. Their willingness to engage openly with challenging questions while maintaining respect for others was a credit to both themselves and the St George’s.

Congratulations to Isla MacCallum, who achieved an outstanding second place for Year 9. This is a wonderful achievement and reflects Isla's thoughtful engagement, intellectual rigour and excellent philosophical thinking throughout the evening.

Congratulations to all students who participated. You should be proud of the way you represented St George's and contributed so positively to the discussions. Well done!
