Fitting finale for a fabulous term

The spring school holidays are here, bringing two weeks of life at a slower pace, different routines and a valuable opportunity to refresh, restore and prioritise time with family and friends.

Term Three has been exceptionally busy and productive, filled with achievements that reflect the energy, commitment and generosity of the St George’s school community. From the spectacular production of Mamma Mia! and Year 12 Drama Finale to the NWAS Sport Carnivals, ACC and Interhouse Athletics, Year 10 Camp and Father Rhys’ Commissioning, there has been much to celebrate.

Many of our students have also demonstrated a strong commitment to service through the WACA Anglicare Sleepout, Hoodies for Homelessness, Sleepout in the City, R U OK? Day and City2Surf. These experiences remind us that education is not only about what we learn in the classroom, but also about the people we become and the positive contributions we should seek to make to improve the lives of those around us. 

The competition for the House Cup has reached new heights through House Week, Interhouse Athletics and Battle of the Bands. Cowan, Gandhi, Lincoln and Mandela have displayed enthusiasm, healthy rivalry and wonderful House spirit throughout the term. With Term Four still ahead, every house token, commendation and contribution matters, whether it is earned on the sporting field, on the stage, in the classroom or simply through enthusiastic participation. May the best house win!

Today, we concluded the term with Mandela Charity Day, a fitting celebration of community, generosity and joy. The Talent Quest was an unmistakable highlight and confirmed that St George’s most definitely has talent. The confidence of our performers and the encouragement of those supporting them created a memorable and enjoyable final day for the whole school.

We wish our Japan Study Tour students and staff a fabulous two weeks in Japan. May they embrace every opportunity to experience another culture, strengthen their language skills, broaden their perspectives and create lasting memories. They flew out of Perth on Wednesday afternoon and I am confident will return next term with much excitement about the many adventures they have experienced together. 

As we enter the holidays, each year group stands at an important point in its journey for the year. Our Year 12 students have completed their mock examinations and should now establish a purposeful study routine for their final ATAR examinations. However, balance in managing their time these holidays is essential. I encourage them to find time to rest, to enjoy the company of those who matter and, quite literally, to stop and smell the roses. When you return, there will only be a few precious days of school remaining before Valedictory. Be present for them, celebrate your friendships and take pride in how far you have come.

Our Year 11 students will return to Term Four preparing themselves to step up into leadership. Our student leaders for 2027 will be announced at the Handover Assembly in Week Two. I encourage our Year 11 students to support one another, celebrate those appointed to formal roles and remember that leadership is demonstrated through integrity, service and the way we treat others. There will be many opportunities for all our Year 11s to be leaders of the school, whether appointed to a formal role or not. 

For our Year 10s, the release of the Upper School subject grid lines marks the final stage of their subject selection decisions. I encourage them to choose wisely, seeking a pathway that reflects their own unique abilities, interests, talents, strengths and future aspirations rather than simply following the choices of their friends. The best pathway is always the one that feels right for you.

For our Year 7, 8 and 9 students, the September Holiday break offers time to reflect on their progress. Term Four will move quickly, so our Middle Year students will need to return ready to engage fully, work consistently and finish the year with purpose. They will also play an important role in warmly welcoming the 128 Year 6 students who will join the St George’s Family in 2027 through our November Orientation Days.

To our students, staff and families, thank you for everything you have contributed throughout Term Three. The breadth of opportunities and achievements across our School would not be possible without the commitment, care and support of our entire community.

These holidays are an invitation to slow down. To enjoy overseas adventures for some, local outings for others, unhurried mornings and the beauty of nature. Spend time outdoors, read for enjoyment, share a meal, enjoy meaningful conversations and allow yourself time to rest and relax.

I wish every member of the St George’s School community a safe, refreshing and enjoyable September holiday break. Rest well before the excitement and wonderful craziness of Term Four begins from Tuesday 13 October.
