Our Place in the Community
One of our key areas of pedagogical focus has been fostering children’s sense of belonging within their community while developing their understanding of road safety through regular community walks and excursions.
At kindergarten, community walks have become an important part of our curriculum.
These walks are not simply about moving from one place to another — they are meaningful opportunities for children to connect with their local environment, build confidence, develop safety awareness, and strengthen their sense of identity and belonging within the wider community.
During our walks, children actively observe and engage with the world around them. Together, we pay attention to road signs, traffic lights, shop signage, public transport, and familiar places within our neighbourhood. Children often excitedly share their own connections to the community, such as:
“If we turn right here, it is the way to my home!”
“Me and my mummy come here for fried chicken!”
“I have babycino at this café before coming to kinder!”
These conversations demonstrate children’s growing understanding of place, familiarity, and connection to their local community. Through repeated experiences within the neighbourhood, children are learning that they are active and valued members of their community.
Our walks have also created many opportunities for positive social interactions. Children enthusiastically wave to passing trams, greet community members, and confidently say hello to people they meet along the way. Over time, we have noticed that local store owners and community members have also become familiar with our kinder group, helping children feel recognised, welcomed, and connected within the community.
One particularly meaningful example was during our Halloween trick-or-treat excursion, where local store owners warmly welcomed the children and had already prepared lollies for them. These experiences help children develop a strong sense of belonging and community connection, while also teaching them about kindness, relationships, and participation in community life.
Community walks have also supported many practical learning opportunities. As part of our cooking experiences, children have walked to nearby supermarkets such as ALDI and Woolworths to purchase ingredients needed for cooking classes. These real-life experiences help children understand the purpose of community spaces and encourage independence, responsibility, and meaningful participation.
Road Safety Education
Road safety has been an essential part of this learning journey. Before and during each walk, educators intentionally engage children in discussions about how to keep themselves and others safe in the community.
Children are learning to:
- recognise and interpret road and traffic signs
- stop and look left and right before crossing roads
- listen carefully to educators during excursions
- hold hands and look after one another
- understand that safety is everyone’s shared responsibility
Through consistent practice and repetition, children have become increasingly confident and capable in navigating familiar environments safely.
As children’s confidence and familiarity with the community grew, educators also reflected on how these experiences were strengthening children’s ability to participate in larger excursions. Because of the many successful community walks throughout the term, both children and educators felt confident extending our adventures further into the wider community.
This included walking excursions to the Japanese School of Melbourne and Glen Education Caulfield South, Princes Park as well as tram excursions to the Caulfield Library and Melbourne Museum.
It has been wonderful to see how these experiences have supported children to become more confident, responsible, and connected learners. Through exploring their local environment, children are not only learning about road safety and the community around them, but also developing a strong sense of belonging, independence, and confidence to engage with the world beyond the kindergarten gates.
We look forward to continuing these meaningful community experiences and supporting children as they grow into confident, capable, and active participants within their world.
