Interschool Sport: Achievements and Opportunities

We have had a busy start to Term 2 with students competing in State Swimming, VCE events and Regional Competitions.

State Swimming

Congratulations to the following students who competed in the State Swimming Finals at MSAC on 26 April - Katie Gevaux, Tim Ingram, Julien Krieger, Georgia Proctor-Parkin, Hannah Proctor-Parkin, Magnus Mulhall, Marcus Chick, William Stephens, Matthew Kanizay, Samuel Stephens,  Frederick Wild and Matteo Rossi- Hunt.  All team members should be proud of their achievements.

VCE Basketball District Competition 2 May

On a chilly May morning, Northcote sent two teams of boys from Years Eleven and Twelve to fight for a chance at hardwood glory, competing with our local rivals, Thornbury High School. Our first match was a Northcote versus Northcote affair, with Northcote A putting their monopoly of our tall players to good use, demolishing Northcote B 100 to 46. With that out of the way, Thornbury was on the chopping block. For the A team, Joe Furphy and Alex Cocco linked up well in the paint to start the rapid flow of points in Northcote’s favour. Joe put on a masterclass of just what a six foot seven centre can do, laying down slam dunks to huge cheers from the Northcote bench. On the other end of the stadium, Northcote B put on a valiant fight against another Thornbury side. Gianni Lorenzin proved deadly from beyond the arc, sinking five three-pointers over the forty-minute game. While Ari Gerantidis and Jack Hart made a strong combination on both ends of the floor, pulling down rebounds and stacking up points together. At the end of the day, Northcote A walked away victorious and will be competing for the regional title in the weeks to come.

VCE AFL and Badminton

Our VCE Football and Badminton teams were also scheduled to compete on May 2. With no other schools entering a team in the competitions, both teams now automatically move through to Regional Finals.

Intermediate Baseball

Well done to our Intermediate Baseball Team, who in tough conditions defeated Hazel Glen in the Regional Final.  The win has secured the boys a spot in the State Finals to be played on May 31 at Kingston Heath Reserve, Cheltenham.  Congratulations boys and good luck at States.

Regional Tennis

Well Done to our Intermediate boys and girls, Yr 8 Boys and Girls and Year 7 Boys  who have competed in the Regional Finals at Booroondarra Tennis Club .  All teams show great team spirit and fantastic sportsmanship while representing our school.

Year 8 Regional Baseball Team

Congratulations to the year 8 boys Baseball team for their valiant efforts at the Regional Finals. The boys started their day with a tough game against the top side, Montmorency. Northcote went down fighting in an entertaining match (8 runs to 4). The Northcote team recovered quickly to put on a show in their next match, beating Epping 11 runs to 6.

A special mention to Stan Goodwin and Maivia Peele-Lopeti for their commitment in coaching and mentoring the team.
