Year 10 – Workplace Rights & Responsibilities

This week, Year 10 students completed our MyPath “Can an Employer Do That?” activity, focusing on workplace rights and responsibilities.

Students worked through different workplace scenarios and completed a quiz exploring what employers can and cannot reasonably ask of young workers, as well as their own responsibilities as employees.

This builds on our recent work on resumes and cover letters, helping students develop some of the practical knowledge they will need as they begin looking for casual and part-time employment.

Year 11 – Exploring Pathways with AI

Our latest Year 11 MyPath session focused on career exploration and how AI can be used as a tool to support career decision-making.

Students began by reflecting on how their interests, strengths, priorities and ideas about their future can change between Years 10, 11 and 12. They then explored how AI can help them investigate possible careers and pathways, including university, VET, apprenticeships, traineeships and employment.

Importantly, students were encouraged not to simply ask AI “What career should I do?” Instead, they looked at how to provide useful information about themselves, ask AI to compare different options and trade-offs and identify factual claims that should be checked using reliable sources.

The key message was that AI can be a useful career exploration tool but it should support rather than make career decisions for students.

Year 12 – Good Luck with Mock Exams

As Term 3 comes to an end, we wish all our Year 12 students the very best for their upcoming mock examinations.

For our ATAR students, the mock exams are an important opportunity to consolidate their learning, practise examination techniques and identify areas to focus on before the final WACE examinations.

For all our Year 12 students, this is also an important time to keep looking ahead. Whether the next step is university, TAFE, an apprenticeship or traineeship, employment or another pathway, continue working on your plans and applications and seek assistance from the Careers Team if you need it.

Good luck to all our Year 12s with their exams and the final stretch of Year 12.

TISC – Important Dates for Year 12

There are several important dates approaching for students applying to university through TISC:

30 September – Medicine & Dentistry applications close: Applications for Curtin Medicine and UWA Assured Pathways to Medicine and Dentistry close at 11:59pm. These courses cannot be added as new preferences after this deadline, although students who already have them listed can still change their preference order.
5 October – First Early Offer Round: First early conditional offers are released to eligible Year 12 applicants for their first preference.
27 November – Education Access Scheme deadline: EAS applications and supporting documentation must be submitted by 5:00pm for Main Round consideration.
30 November – Notre Dame Exercise & Sport Science/Physiotherapy pathway: Applications and required documents close at 11:59pm for the Bachelor of Exercise and Sport Science Assured Pathway into the Master of Physiotherapy.
2 December – Final Early Offer Round: Final early conditional offers are released to eligible Year 12 applicants for their first preference.
9 December – Supporting documents: Final date to upload documents or transcripts to guarantee consideration in the Main Round.
20 December – ATAR Results & Preference Changes: WA ATAR results and Universities Admission Advice Letters become available from 8:00am. Students have until 11:59pm to apply or add/rearrange preferences before the Main Round.
24 December – Main Round Offers: University Main Round offers are released. Applications and preference changes then reopen for the Second Round.
13 January 2027 – Second Round deadline: Final date to apply or change preferences for Second Round consideration.
20 January 2027 – Second Round Offers: Second Round offers are released.

Important: Students should continue to check their TISC application and preference order carefully. Your first preference should be the course you most want to receive an offer for.

Upcoming Events & Opportunities

FREE ECU Year 12 ATAR Revision Sessions

Tuesday 29 September – Friday 2 October

A final reminder that ECU is offering FREE Year 12 ATAR revision sessions during the school holidays, available both on campus at Joondalup and online.

Subjects include:

Biology
Human Biology
Chemistry
English
Mathematics Applications
Mathematics Methods
Mathematics Specialist
Physics

Each four-hour session provides syllabus revision, examination techniques, revision strategies, Q&A and revision notes.

With mock and WACE examinations approaching, these sessions may be particularly useful for students wanting some additional structured revision during the holidays.

Looking Ahead – ECU UniPrep

Monday 19 October | 6:00–7:00 pm | Online

ECU is holding an online information session about UniPrep, its university preparation pathway. This may be useful for students who are interested in university but may not achieve the ATAR required for direct entry or who would benefit from an alternative pathway into undergraduate study.

Students and families can learn how UniPrep works and how it can provide a pathway towards university study.

Holiday Career Planning

The school holidays can be a good opportunity for students to spend a little time investigating what comes next.

You don't need to have your whole career planned. Instead, consider doing one or two practical things:

Research a course, apprenticeship, traineeship or career you have been considering.
Check the entry requirements and prerequisites for courses that interest you.
Update your resume and begin looking for casual employment.
Look at the Careers or Early Careers pages of employers you would be interested in working for.
Speak with people already working in industries that interest you.
Year 12 students applying to university should review their TISC preferences and upcoming deadlines.

Small steps now can make future pathway decisions much easier.

Career Spotlight – Public Health

When people think about health careers, they often immediately think of doctors, nurses or physiotherapists. Public Health takes a different approach - focusing on improving the health of whole communities and populations.

People working in Public Health may be involved in areas such as:

Health promotion and education
Disease prevention
Community health programs
Environmental health
Health policy
Epidemiology and health data
Research
Government health programs

Public Health can suit students who are interested in health and science but also enjoy working with people, analysing problems and thinking about how systems can improve people's health.

Graduates can work across government health departments, local government, hospitals, community organisations, research organisations and the private sector.

It is also a good example of a career area where there isn't necessarily one single job at the end of the degree. Instead, study in Public Health can lead to a variety of roles focused on improving the health and wellbeing of communities.
