Healthy Bodies, Healthy Minds – Building Lifelong Wellbeing

Children in the Rainbow Lorikeet Room have been developing their understanding of health and wellbeing by taking increasing responsibility for their own physical health through meaningful play, stories, and conversations. To support this learning, we introduced a puppet character named Nibbling Nick, who loves eating junk food. Through a series of engaging stories and everyday discussions, the children have become caring teachers, helping Nick make healthier food choices and understand how nutritious foods help our bodies grow, learn, and play.

Together, we explored what a healthy lunchbox can look like, with children using the dramatic play area to create balanced lunchboxes for Nick. Our shared reading experiences, including The Boy Who Only Ate Pancakes and I Will Never Not Ever Eat a Tomato, encouraged children to think creatively about trying new foods. We discovered that pancakes can become colourful and nutritious by adding ingredients such as spinach and berries, and learnt that giving foods imaginative names just like the character who called tomatoes “moonsquirters” can make trying new foods more exciting and enjoyable.

We also welcomed another puppet friend, Doctor Daisy, who helps Nick understand how healthy eating gives us energy, keeps our bodies strong, and supports our overall wellbeing. These experiences foster children’s confidence, curiosity, decision-making, and independence while promoting positive attitudes towards healthy lifestyles in a safe, supportive, and inclusive environment.

Over the coming weeks, our focus will extend to physical wellbeing through active play, movement, mindfulness, and yoga experiences. We will also explore healthy hygiene practices, including handwashing, self-care routines, and oral health, supporting children to develop lifelong habits that keep themselves and others safe. This learning will connect with our upcoming visit from the dentist, providing children with meaningful opportunities to deepen their understanding of caring for their bodies and wellbeing.
