Hocus Pocus!
Term 3 is flying by, and we are all enjoying the many engaging learning experiences, with the excitement of Book Week just around the corner!
It was wonderful to see so many families during Parent Teacher Interviews and to share the incredible progress each student has made. It is hard to believe we are already halfway through Year 1!
Literacy
We have been focusing on procedural writing and have had lots of fun learning about how to care for pets. Be warned parents, the children may soon be asking for a new puppy or even a turtle!
The students also used graphic organisers to plan information reports about mythical creatures. They explored the difference between headings and subheadings and learnt how to organise information into clear sections to improve readability and make it easier for readers to navigate. They discovered that subheadings break large blocks of text into smaller, logical parts, helping readers quickly locate specific information.
Finally the students also used their imaginations to write a procedural text for creating magical potions.
Maths
We have been focusing on using counting on and counting back strategies to solve addition and subtraction problems. Students have been using number lines to support accurate calculations and build their confidence with these strategies. Below are some examples of how we use number lines to solve addition and subtraction problems.
Wellbeing
We have been learning the importance of persevering when something feels challenging and asking for help when we need it. The students enjoyed sharing strategies they use when they are feeling stressed, overwhelmed, or sad. Some of the strategies they suggested included practising yoga, hugging a friend, taking a quiet moment, and having a rest.
Lastly, the Year 1 students have had a wonderful time getting to know their Year 5 buddies. The two year levels have connected beautifully, building new friendships while enjoying Maths fluency games together. It has been a fun, positive experience, and we look forward to many more buddy activities throughout the year.
