To Infinity and Beyond!

Year 4 has been absolutely over the moon with our exciting Space unit! Last week, students blasted off into a hands-on activity where they recreated the phases of the Moon using… OREOS! It was a delicious way to explore why the Moon appears to change shape throughout the month, and the biscuits certainly disappeared at light speed! The activity was a huge hit, and students had a stellar time combining learning with a tasty treat.

Writing

Our young astronomers have also finalised their information report writing. Students chose their own fascinating space topic. From planets and black holes to galaxies, stars, astronauts and space missions, they researched a galaxy of interesting facts. They then refined their ideas into well-structured information reports, using topic-specific vocabulary and detailed explanations to teach others about their chosen subject. The quality of their work has been truly out of this world, and it has been wonderful to see their confidence as writers continue to skyrocket. We are incredibly proud of all the effort they have put in, and their curiosity has certainly reached new heights. Who knows… we may have a few future astronomers or astronauts!

Maths

We have recently completed a unit on addition, subtraction through number lines and also finding unknown values in equivalent number sentences. While this has been a challenging concept, it has been fantastic to see their confidence and understanding continue to grow as the unit progressed.

Have a crack at these together at home:

• 36 − 4 = ? − 9

• 45 + ? = 23 + 50

   

To continue building your child's number fluency, encourage them to spend some time on Times Tables Rock Stars, NumberBots, or simply quiz them with quick addition and subtraction questions. A few minutes of practice each day can make a big difference!
