Year 2 News

From Risa Hammel, Year 2E teacher
Jumping into Maths
English
We have continued our investigation into A Journey Home. In reading, we have practiced different comprehension strategies using themes found in our main text, such as deforestation and global warming.
Our Year 2s used questioning, rereading, and using context clues and text features to find unknown meanings. We also practiced our oral reading fluency, pretending we were news reporters and using our best voices to read out loud.
Writing
Our Year 2s have been mastering using plans to facilitate writing. We have followed our writing process, planned, drafted, edited and revised, and published, several pieces across the past couple weeks. This included summaries, captions, wanted posters, and information reports. Amazing work to all our fantastic writers for following the writing process and getting some great pieces done!
Maths
Has seen a focus on place value, followed by beginning our unit on addition and subtraction. In place value, our Year 2s looked at ordering, renaming, representing, and rounding, two-digit and three-digit numbers. This focus transitioned into addition and subtraction, learning different strategies to find totals and take away using both single and double digit numbers.
Here are two strategies we have learned that you can practice at home with your child:
Partitioning: 64 + 12 is the same as 60 + 10 and 4 +2 totaled together (chunking into place values).
Number lines: make like a frog and jump to the nearest ten.
We also played a fun game called Salute (as seen in the pictures this week), which you can play at home with your child. Ask them the rules and have a game night, all you need is a group of 3 and a pack of cards!
Technology
We are beginning to learn about the importance of cyber safety and personal information, and would appreciate if this message was echoed at home with any technology use:
Keep your personal information private and do not share it with people online.
Wellbeing
We looked at how big feelings affect us physically and what we notice about our bodies when we are experiencing big feelings.
Thank you to all our Year 2 families and we look forward to another great two weeks of learning.
