National Walk to School Day

10th May 2024

Congratulations to all of the students who chose to walk/ride to school on Friday 10th May as part of National Walk Safely to School Day. While the morning started a little wet, the walk to school was dry and it was great to see so many families opt for an active means of traveling to school. The students who walked/rode to school were greeted by our amazing House Captains at the school gates who distributed walk to school stickers enabling those active travellers to enter our raffle. Congratulations to the 20 lucky winners listed below. A big thank you to all of the parents and students who joined me at the Hummel Way playground and formed our walking bus. I encourage students to develop a regular routine of walking with parents or friends to enjoy the benefits that active travel enables which are listed below.

Wellbeing benefits

  • Confidence: active travel helps build children’s confidence. Children learn important skills such as road safety and awareness of their surroundings. This can help promote independence and resilience.
  • Boosts energy levels: increasing children’s activity levels can help generate positive learning outcomes such as improved concentration in the classroom.
  • Being social: active travel is a great opportunity for children to have fun and to socialise with other local children or their family.
  • Connecting with the neighbourhood: by exploring local routes to school, children become familiar with their local neighbourhood and can connect with the world around them.
  • Environmentally friendly: active travel is good for not only children’s health but the health of the environment too. It helps to reduce emissions and traffic congestion on the road.
