As Mother’s Day is fast approaching, Prep to Year 6 students learned about its significance. They also acquired some essential words and phrases of Mother’s Day (母亲节). One of their favourite phrases is ‘Mum, I love you!’ (妈妈,我爱你!). As creative thinkers, they made a colourful and authentic Mother’s Day card in a bilingual version to celebrate this special day with their mum/family.

Year 3 and 4 learners have been actively exploring different countries around the world this term, showing great interest and enthusiasm. As part of their student agency, they took the initiative to design a country flashcard, researching their home country in Chinese using Google Translate. Their excitement was palpable as they eagerly awaited the opportunity to showcase their creations in the classroom.

Finally, as a curious learner, our Year 5 and 6 students inquired about their name in Chinese in recent weeks. They grasped a solid understanding of the pronouns, basic verbs, and some question words in Chinese. Moreover, they also demonstrated their critical thinking skills when learning the special rule when introducing their full name in Chinese:

Surname  姓

Given name 名/名字

1st

2nd

I was impressed to see that they were able to exchange information about their name by using the key sentence pattern ‘What’s your name? 你叫什么名字?My name is… 我叫。。。’

I also introduced another key sentence pattern to extend their understanding,  ‘What’s your surname? 你姓什么? My surname is…. 我姓。。。’ The highlight of this week was that most of the learners completed an artistic version of their name tag in Chinese.

I am so proud of their learning progress in Chinese and encourage all the students to boost their confidence by regularly practising the learning content at home.
