Arts & Technology News

It has been a busy and creative term across the Arts and Technology subjects with students developing practical skills through a range of exciting projects. There were many highlights across the Arts and Technology subjects this term, but here are some of the standout moments.

Our VCE Media students recently spent a day at ACMI where they watched the Top Screen films and explored The Story of the Moving Image exhibition. This was a fantastic opportunity for students to see high-quality student productions and gain inspiration for their own filmmaking. Back at school, students have been developing their own film ideas and exploring the importance of Australian stories and representation in media.

In Year 9 Food studies, students recently completed their SAC 2 Multicultural Practical Assessment, preparing a range of dishes including sushi, handmade pizza base and toppings, fresh pasta with basil pesto and Silvia Colloca: Yoghurt and olive oil cake with strawberry topping. Students demonstrated excellent practical skills while exploring foods from different cultures around the world.

Our Year 9/10 Dance students have spent the semester choreographing and developing their own original dance works, as well as whole class group performances. They recently showcased these pieces at For Your DNA Creative Arts in Croydon, providing a valuable opportunity to share their creativity and talents with the wider community. Performing in a fully equipped local studio allowed students to experience a professional performance environment while building confidence and celebrating the work they have created throughout the year.

In Woodwork, Year 10 students have been constructing stools using traditional hand tools and techniques, without the use of power tools, while Year 9 students have been designing and building their own footstools. Our VET Furnishing students have also been developing their practical woodworking skills through the construction of step stools.

Our Year 10 Art students explored anatomy and shading, while Year 7 students investigated self-expression and identity through their artwork. In Visual Communication and Design, students explored the design process by creating product and architectural designs. They developed drawing and visual communication skills to generate, refine and present creative design ideas.

Our VET Music Performance students have been working hard on their musicianship, improvisation skills and performance craft. Short class performances have evolved into 20-minute lunchtime performances. They will finish with full production ‘showcase concerts’ at the end of the term. Our VET Music Sound students have been learning recording studio techniques and live sound applications. Highlights include setting up digital and analogue PA Systems, recording studio demo tracks and recreating film scores with sound effects and foley work. 

It has been great to see students across the Arts and Technology areas demonstrate creativity, collaboration and perseverance throughout the semester. We look forward to seeing these skills continue to grow as students build on their achievements and take on new challenges in the second half of the year.
