Food Technology
Melba’s Yr 11 Food Studies class have flexed their creative muscles in response to Unit 2: Food makers, Area of Study 1: Australia’s food systems, food industry design challenge:
To design an all-vegan pasta dish that includes one pulse variety and two root vegetables that could be potentially upscaled to be sold in supermarkets.
Who would have thought that you can make handmade pasta without the addition of eggs! Students were busy exploring orecchiette which are dome-shaped pasta from the Apulia region of Italy that looks like a tiny ear’ and farfalle pasta shapes, which translates to butterfly in Italian. Students then designed their own advertisement to present to a Woolworths sales executive, complete with well written sales pitch.
According to Expert Market Research “The Australia vegan food market is estimated to be valued at AUD 743.38 million in 2025”.

Winter FONO
On Wednesday 29 July, we held our Winter Music Concert, FONO (For One Night Only).
FONO is an evening that showcases the musical talents and achievements of students involved in Melba College’s Instrumental Music and VET Music programs.
On a cool winter’s evening, the space at the bottom of E Building was transformed from a learning street into a vibrant live music venue. With professional lighting, smoke effects and an enthusiastic crowd, more than 60 student performers took to the stage to deliver an outstanding evening of music.
The event was exceptionally well attended, with an enthusiastic audience eager to enjoy some high-quality live entertainment—and the students certainly did not disappoint!

Drama
This term in Drama students have been hard at work exploring, creating, and presenting dramatic works across a range of different theatre styles. In our Year 8 classes we have been exploring the expressive skills and determining what exactly contributes to the creation of a character. Students have completed job interviews as fictional characters, and begun a brief unit on utilising mime skills to further communicate dramatic purpose.
Over in 9/10 land our intermediate class has been hard at work creating their devised ensemble performance (which will hit the stage early term 4) and exploring modern contemporary performance styles in class and in the real world. Students participated in an excursion to the Arts Centre Melbourne to see Shake & Stir Theatre Company's professional production of GRIMM. This energetic reimagining of classic Brother's Grimm fairy tales left student awestruck and bewildered at just what is possible in the theatre world.
