Mobile Phones and Smart Watches

Mobile Phones- Student Use Policy

We understand that for some families, mobile phones and smart watches are important tools that support student safety- particularly for those walking to and from school. However, during the school day, mobile phones and smart watches are not required for learning or day-to-day schooling. To ensure a focused learning environment and the safety and privacy of all members of our school community, devices capable of messaging, calling, photography or video recording must not be accessed during school hours. 

This includes mobile phones and smart watches. 

If students are required to bring their mobile phone or smart watch to school the following process will be in place:

• The mobile phone or smart watch must be collected and will be securely stored by the classroom teacher at the start of each day and then returned at the end of the day during the pack up process.
• This includes all smart watches which connect to the internet or can be used to send/receive messages, make calls, or take photos or video.
• Students will not have access to their phone or smart watch during school hours, whether onsite or at an excursion or event.
• Students who use their personal mobile phones inappropriately at North Melbourne Primary School may be issued with consequences consistent with our school’s existing student engagement polices.

Students may wear simple digital watches (e.g. those with only time, alarm, or stopwatch functions) and basic fitness trackers (e.g. step counters) provided they do not have messaging, call, gaming, or internet functions.

If you need to contact your child, you can do so via the school office. If students need to contact their parents, and it is deemed necessary, staff will contact families via compass on their behalf. The front office is the first point of call for all families. If you require an exemption due to health or other exceptional circumstances, please contact the office.
