Developing Minds

These last few weeks, Grade 3 students have been learning about place value and how our base-ten system works. They’ve been practising how to read, make, compare and order numbers up to and beyond 10,000 through games and problem-solving tasks.

We have also been focusing on developing a positive maths mindset through our learning pit. Students discussed how learning can feel challenging at times, but growth happens when we keep trying.

“At the beginning I would get surprised sometimes by maths tasks. Sometimes they are easy but sometimes they are hard. When it gets to the hard bit I want everything to be perfect until I try again and again and I can get out of it. Eventually I get good at it which feels very good and like I am proud of myself. The witch shows when I am feeling sad, angry, stressed and frustrated. My three strategies for getting out of the learning pit are to try again, ask for help and believe in yourself!”
