Year 2 News

From Risa Hammel, Year 2E teacher

The powerful and knowledgeable Year 2's

The past couple weeks have been filled with learning and settling into our classrooms. In writing, the Grade 2s have been practicing their writing cycle. We have been showing our powerful writing by following our POWre strategy: picking an idea, organising our notes in a planner, writing a draft, and then editing and revising. We are building up our writing stamina so we can branch out into different genres soon.

In reading and phonics we have been practicing our letter-sound relationships and working on our spelling patterns. We have been exploring our emotions and classroom routines in wellbeing, and have just started using our iPads in technology.

Our focus for maths the last few weeks has been place value. We are practicing renaming, ordering, making, and comparing double-digit and triple-digit numbers. At home, you can practice some of the games we have played in class to continue to build place value awareness and foundations. Try grabbing a deck of cards and taking turns creating three-digit numbers using the cards. Take five rounds to see who can make the biggest or smallest number possible. You could even try switching your partner's cards with one of yours!

We are looking forward to a fantastic next few weeks as we get more settled and keep building our knowledge!
