Year 6 News

From Ava McLaughlin, Year 6 teacher

Presenting 6C

I feel so lucky to have joined class 6C as their teacher this year. They have warmly welcomed me into NMPS, and their behaviour and effort everyday makes me so proud! We look forward to showing off our great work throughout the year.

In our new class, we have already had so much fun getting to know each other and exploring all areas of learning together.

We have enjoyed all sorts of activities together including things like: finding good brain breaks for our class, learning Māori words from our teacher (she is from New Zealand!), we also get to make delicious snacks in cooking as a class.

We have been getting into the routine of using our wellbeing books after playtimes and we've got to design our nametags over the last couple weeks.

Lunar New Year

This week we made origami horses for Lunar New Year, a festival that people all over the world celebrate. They were hard to make, but we persevered.

Red is used as a lucky colour traditionally during Lunar New Year. We made origami horses as it is the year of the horse. Most people in year 6 are born in the year of the horse as well.

The origami instructions were complex, but we worked hard and the outcome was exquisite.

Writing

So far this term in writing we have look at the writing planners SPACE, TIDE, and TREE. CSPACE is used in narrative writing, and stands for Characters, Purpose/Problem, Action, Conclusion and Emotions. TREE is used for persuasive writing, and stands for Topic Sentence, Reason, Explanation, and Ending.  TIDE is used in Informative writing, and stands for Topic Sentence, Important Idea, Detailed Explanation, and Ending.

We also have been writing about the Winter Olympics. We had four seeds to write stories about, like Tina and Milo the mascots, and the history of the Olympics.

Lastly we did a cold write with a seed that included a room with a bunch of Egyptian tombs. We had time for planning, drafting, editing, and revising!

What I am looking forward to this year

Hi, some things I am looking forward to this year is…

Camp!!

We are excited for camp because it will be so fun to learn how to ski, and I’m excited to hang out with my cohort at camp! It will also be so fun to see the snow!

Another thing we are excited for is… cooking!

We will get to try new things and learn new techniques in cooking. It will also be good to practise in groups because we need to know how to use teamwork!

Graduation is also another very thrilling thing coming up at the end of the year, which will be so exciting!! At graduation it will be fun to do a farewell dance with our friends and hanging out with family and friends on our big goodbye. After that, we will be starting a new chapter of our lives.

Thank you for listening!!

Maths

In maths, over the few weeks we have been working on our diagnostic tests. Pathways is a program that will see what level we are at, and then doing a series of tasks before another test. We also learnt what integers were as well. Integers are whole numbers that don’t have decimals. When we were learning about number lines we were also working with negative numbers.

Specialist

Hello! Specialist this year has been so much fun and we would love to tell you all about it.

First we have art where we had to draw horses since this year is the year of the horse.

Now PE! In PE we’ve been making our own games or adding rules to already made games. We have been playing games like piggy in the middle with a spin, 4 corners and gauntlet.

In AUSLAN we have been doing revision with games like the colour game, the animal game and more.

In Cooking we’ve been making things like damper and curry, we’ve also been making the food which has been fun too.

In Science we are learning about renewable energy and have been making posters about it.

In Performing Arts we have been doing a lot of different things but a few highlights have been learning a new song and learning a Russian dance.

Thats all but we can’t wait to do even more throughout the year!
