This term in Grade 3, we thoroughly enjoyed studying Charlotte's Web by E.B. White as part of our Literacy unit. We followed along with the heartwarming story of friendship between Wilbur and Charlotte, and we got to know other important characters such as Fern, the Arables and Zuckermans, and Templeton.

The novel provided many opportunities to explore rich Tier 2 vocabulary. Students investigated and used words such as remarkable, radiant, and frolic, discussing their meanings and applying them in their own speaking and writing. Building a strong vocabulary helped students deepen their understanding of the text while expanding their language skills.

Using Charlotte's Web as our mentor text, we focused on developing sentence-level writing skills. We practised using coordinating and subordinating conjunctions to create more complex and engaging sentences. We also worked on summarising paragraphs, identifying key information, and expanding simple sentences with additional detail and description.

Inspired by the themes of friendship and kindness in the novel, we planned and wrote our own narratives about two unlikely friends. We also channeled our creativity in our web art pieces, where we had to find a word that described Wilbur from a magazine, just like Charlotte and Templeton did. We are incredibly proud of the creativity, enthusiasm, and growth our students demonstrated throughout this unit.
