Auslan

Our students across all year levels have shown immense dedication in Auslan. The Preps are now able to sign about family members, colours, sports and build basic sentences using phrases like ‘I like’, ‘I want’, ‘I love’.

Our Year 1 and 2 students blew us away with their enthusiasm for numbers! While the curriculum focused on counting to 100, the students’ curiosity couldn’t be contained – they wanted to go higher, so we learned how to count all the way to a million! They also learned how to tell the time using o’clock and half-past, and practiced signing sentences themed around sports.

Our year 3 - 6 students took on some brilliant creative challenges this term. By bringing in their Chromebooks to class, they integrated technology with language learning to film and review paragraphs using their own unique storytelling ideas. A major focus for this group was understanding the unique linguistic structure of Auslan, specifically how to embody characters rather than relying on English concepts. For example: to sign a ‘baby turtle,’ we don’t just cradle our arms like we would for a human baby. The students had to become the character. They explored questions like: How would a baby turtle actually look? How do you show that in Auslan? How does a turtle hide compared to how a human hides? Term 2 has seen huge growth in our student’s overall ability and confidence to convey deep meaning through Auslan. I am incredibly proud of every student’s progress, dedication, and creativity this term.
