Year Five
Celebration of Learning
A summary of our learning this term in Year 5. We have learned many things in term 2; had challenges, achievements, incursions and interschool sports and of course, engaged with our friends.
Religion
We celebrated Easter and the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. Students studied in depth the third person of the Holy Trinity - Holy Spirit - and the role it plays in our lives and wider world.
Incursion for Economics
Our students explored key economic concepts, including needs versus wants, opportunity cost, and trade-offs, while also learning how working and trading benefits individuals and society. The highlight of the term was an incursion where they put into practise their learning through interactive games and activities. They developed decision-making, teamwork, and problem-solving skills in a fun, real-world setting.

Knowledge Rich Literacy
This term, Year 5 inquiry learners stepped back into the Industrial Revolution, exploring how inventions and factories transformed the way people lived and worked. Alongside this historical journey, students explored Economics, investigating how money, trade and resources shape decisions in our everyday lives. Through research, discussion and hands-on tasks, students practised asking great questions, gathering evidence and making connections between past and present. From steam engines to spending choices, our young inquirers have been thinking critically about how systems - old and new - work, and why understanding them matters.

Maths
This term, Year 5 mathematicians have explored a rich range of topics! In 2D shape and 3D objects, students connected nets to objects and explored symmetry and transformations. In decimals, they ordered and compared numbers up to three decimal places, while fractions work focused on equivalent fractions, comparing and ordering fractions and converting from improper fractions to mixed numerals. Our probability unit had students conducting chance experiments and estimating likelihoods, and in time, students converted between 12- and 24-hour formats.

English
Year 5 students have had a busy term of English learning! Spelling and grammar remain a consistent focus through our evidence-based PhOrMes program, where students explored Latin and Greek word origins to build vocabulary and decoding skills. In writing, students practised paraphrasing, summarising and character analysis, sharpening their ability to inform and engage readers. Our novel study Black Cockatoo, explored Mia's experience of family, culture and loss in the Kimberley.
