Year Six

 Celebration of Learning

As our Year 6 students journey toward secondary school, Term Two has seen them settled into the rigour of our core Maths, English, and knowledge-rich curriculum, alongside the broader Year 6 program. Class meetings are well in swing, giving students opportunities to lead discussions, practise public speaking, and build leadership and teamwork skills for the years ahead. The term has also been punctuated by highlights including leading interschool sports, special days, and Confirmation — contributing to a busy and rewarding term for our Year 6 cohort.

Probability and a Pinch of Place Value

Students have tackled a rich variety of mathematics! In Fractions, students compared, ordered and simplified fractions with related and unrelated denominators, using equivalence and highest common factors to find connections between numbers. Our Probability unit had students describing and estimating likelihoods on numerical scales, applying these to real-life situations, and comparing expected versus actual results from chance experiments. To close the term, students delved into decimals, building confidence adding and subtracting using place value and vertical algorithms.

The Write Stuff

Year 6 students have built a strong foundation of English skills this term! In our novel study, students journeyed through Louis Sachar's Holes, building fluency and comprehension as they unravelled its mysteries. Alongside this, students took part in fluency pairs sessions, reading aloud and giving feedback to strengthen reading fluency, comprehension and speaking skills together. Natural Disasters was a favourite knowledge-rich topic for many. In writing, students crafted factual recounts and projects exploring natural disasters, from bushfires to tsunamis, refining sentence structure, paragraphing and descriptive detail. Students also built vocabulary and spelling knowledge — laying groundwork for the deeper textual analysis ahead in high school.

Confirmation

Confirmation was the core focus of Religion this term. At our Confirmation, we felt happy and gifted with the Holy Spirit and felt closer to God. We learnt about the gifts of the Holy Spirit, symbols and Pentecost. We had to pick a Saint for Confirmation and complete a project about how they lived their life. We also picked a sponsor, interview and reflect on them within our saint project. A sponsor is a person who can guide you through your Confirmation and the rest of your life. At Confirmation when I walked up they put a cross on our heads with holy oil that the priest blessed. Emilia and Benjy

Finding rhythm through Wellbeing

Wellbeing is part of our learning each week. The highlight of the term was a Wellbeing Day that centred around a Dance incursion. They taught us a dance for the whole school, and a dance for juniors, middle school and then ours was shared with Grade 5. After we learnt the dances, we met in the hall and performed it for the rest of the school. It was a really fun experience!  Lila Y & Zoe F.
